Taekwondo is suitable for everyone

Why Taekwondo?

Taekwondo is a wonderful martial art and a great form of exercise. A sport suitable for all age groups . . . children, teenagers, adults and seniors.

Our sessions are deal for beginners or someone coming back to Taekwondo. Beginners will start with a simple pattern, which is what we call the series of movements all students learn. Then progress once you have mastered each level. Each session will typically work on patterns, pad work, combinations and conditioning exercises with controlled contact when you are ready.

Taekwondo is ideal for children of all ages

Taekwondo – Juniors

Younger students quickly adapt to a calm and respectful environment in which each student is free and empowered to explore their body and learn to master both their physical and mental selves.

They will start with a beginner pattern, which is what we call the series of movements all students learn. They will then progress from a simple starter pattern to more challenging ones once they have mastered that level. Each session will typically work on their patterns, pad work, combinations and conditioning exercises with controlled contact when they are ready.

There is no age limit to learning Taekwondo

Taekwondo – Adults & Seniors

Taekwondo will improve fitness, wellbeing and mental focus, whilst improving flexibility and cardiovascular health.

Recent clinical studies indicate that regular Taekwondo practice enhances cognitive function, memory, physical balance, and neuroplasticity that can help manage and potentially delay the progression of dementia and alzheimer's in older adults.

Senior students will only need to consider if you are able to practice safely, if you have any doubt, check with your GP and contact us to discuss your specific conditions.

Gradings measure your development

Gradings

As you progress and improve there are opportunities throughout the year to be assessed on what you have learned. These are called gradings and if the instructor feels you have shown that you have learned and improved you will be rewarded with your next colour of belt. The colour of your belt signifies the level you have achieved and comes with an immense sense of achievement and respect from your fellow students.

The gradings usually involve the majority students and is a coming together of students from all sessions and a great way to share the sense of achievement and support each other as a club.

See our Grading Theory page for more information of belts and learning requirements for each.

Competitions are a chance to test your skills

Competitions

Local competitions take place most years and are an chance to test your skills.

They are optional, but whilst it isn't a requirement to attend it is a great way to meet SCMA members from other sessions and also the wider Taekwondo community. They are a chance to challenge yourself in a competitive environment and celebrate everyones achievement.

The competition days usually involve different ways to compete; Patterns – where you compete against someone of a similar level to show your pattern, Sparring – a chance to pit your contact skills against someone of a similar size, weight and level to score points, Highest kick and Longest flying kick.

A willingness to listen and learn

What do I need to bring to my first FREE Trial session?

Firstly a willingness to listen and learn, then a sense of self control and respect for your instructor and fellow students. Whilst the sessions are a chance to learn a form of self defence it is important that this is done with everyones safety first and foremost.

As for kit and clothing, our Trial Sessions are a chance for you to get a taste without spending out on gear and class fees – if you decide Taekwondo is for you, all we ask is that you eventually purchase a uniform, such as you would see in any Dojang, prices for uniforms are relatively low, if you have any concerns, just ask!
